Review of Life Itself (2014) by Alex W — 07 Apr 2015
When asked on his deathbed why he called his autobiography "Life Itself," Roger Ebert was unable to give an answer. While I have not read his autobiography, I can take a guess how the documentary of the same name earns its title.
Roger Ebert's filmic epithet, while technically about his life, exists as a testament to the human spirit. The film uses Ebert's final battle with cancer as a framework to hang his story, reflecting on his life as he wastes away.
Not just a story about Ebert, Life Itself is about the human condition, using its subject as an ultimate example of mortality. Despite the macabre focus, Life Itself is truly life affirming and deserves recognition as one of the great film biographies.
