Review of Life Is Beautiful (1997) by Chernyeh Y — 22 Apr 2011
This was profoundly touching, but it didn't blow me away like it did for others. Strictly from a movie standpoint, I believe the lightheartedness he portrays is leaned on a little too much and eliminates the sense of struggle in certain situations.
Although it is understandable that he is doing this to protect his son from the harsh reality of the concentration camp, it makes the movie seem like it's fast-forwarding through and it makes the ending of the reunion with the son and mother less fulfilling and meaningful.
Nevertheless, if you have any sort of compassion, you will find this movie very moving. I appreciate this story.
