Review of Life in a Metro (2007) by Arin D — 06 Feb 2009
Another great urban Indian film - and for once it's not a Madhur Bhandarkar product. Though it's common enough to make an 'interconnected paths in a metropolis' film - there must have been hundreds already since Altman's original Short Cuts - this is still a refreshingly new for its treatment of love in late modern India.
A very sensual scene with Shilpa Shetty and Shiney Ahuja (I can't believe I would ever write that). I confess I can excuse the neon-lit scene and all the cliched overtones because Shilpa's flat tummy made up for a lot.
Everything is great, sure - but can Indian directors please tone down the use of a background score? Great background music never becomes noticeable, just sets the tone. The film and the actors are key, Anurag Basu, not the huge, swelling chords you've poured all over each dramatic scene.
Otherwise, good job.
