Review of L!fe Happens (2011) by Jc E — 22 Oct 2012
I read a few reviews after I watched this movie, since I didn't really know how to formulate my thoughts on it. While I do agree with some that thought it felt a bit too sitcom-y, I don't really think that's an outright reason to not like the film.
Then I thought again. The majority of critics probably didn't like the film for one reason, and one only: the protagonist, Kim (Krysten Ritter - 'She's Out of My League'), didn't have an abortion.
It's the only logical conclusion for the flick not garnering a healthier critical appeal. Now, does that mean that the story really has strong legs to stand on? Not really, but it's still funny to boot, and features a hilarious but heartfelt lead performance from Ritter, and some charming co-starring players including Kate Bosworth (Straw Dogs), Rachel Bilson ("How I Met Your Mother"), and Geoff Stults (She's Out of My League) - the sooner you forget that Jason Biggs (American Pie) is in this flick, the better.
It's funny, has some delightfully awkward chemistry, and is incredibly frank in parts. Also, Bilson's character, while portrayed as somewhat aloof, isn't demeaned due to her beliefs - a rarity for Christian characters in movies these days.
It's not the greatest movie out there, but it's a nice comedy that does cherish life, no matter how inconvenient it may be.
