Review of Life (2017) by Brandon D — 05 Jun 2017
First things first, don't let the fact that this film is, to an extent, an Alien clone mixed with touches of Gravity. Which, it is. But this film definitely has it's own touches that make it very much worth your time.
Upon first viewing I was very excited to see this film, and I wasn't dissatisfied.
Life opens with an amazing 7 minute sequence that sets the tone for the first act and quite frankly, the whole film. The first act captures you with suspense of what the creature is, but also allows you to catch feelings for the characters in play.
The second act takes off with a thrilling sequence in the lab and doesn't let up, even with a drag in pace when two characters converse about a book, it picks up very quickly once again until the finale and twist ending.
Pros:
The acting is phenomenal, and the casting choices were great, this was easily an A+ cast on board for this film and they own these roles.
The story is one we've all seen before for most of the film...until it isn't, and it flourishes into its own film in the third act.
The special effects and cinematography is absolutely brilliant. Every time it showed Earth or anything in space I was mesmerized.
The suspense is thrilling and every scene with the alien is intriguing and pulse pounding.
Cons:
It does suffer from lack of characterization for a few of the main characters such as Rebecca Ferguson's, Ryan Reynold's and Olga Dihovichnaya's.
For most of the film it is just another trapped in space film thriller.
Conclusion:
The main problem people have had with the this film is that it's just another Alien clone, but it flourishes into its own film and is a solid entry to the sci-fi/trapped in space genre with its characters, thrilling sequences and brilliant twist ending.
Rating: B+.
