Review of Life (2017) by Billy S — 28 Mar 2017
Although there are some problems with the story, "Life" is well acted and gruesome, enough to make you turn your head away in fear.
Life tells the story of the six-member crew of the International Space Station that is on the cutting edge of one of the most important discoveries in human history: the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. As the crew begins to conduct research, their methods end up having unintended consequences and the life form proves more intelligent than anyone ever expected.
Just a few days before seeing this film, I saw a scene from the film in the theater during the previews. That scene alone made my eyes squint in fear and my hands grip the seat. Because of that, I became even more excited for this film. After finally getting the opportunity yesterday I must say, I was greatly surprised by this film and felt that it was really well made.
The acting in this movie was great. The entire cast gave great performances and even though there was a lack of character depth, the emotional performances gave extra weight to each character. I'll tell you that Jake Gyllenhaal is still my favorite actor in Hollywood today and I'm always on board to see one of his films. Everyone here did fantastic jobs, and I also liked the diverse cast.
This movie was extremely intense as well. Each moment between the characters and the monster initiated this sense of fear in my head. The CGI was gruesome and this movie did not hold back. There were many moments where I almost looked away in fear because some of the things on screen are pretty intense.
