Review of Life (2017) by Andrew C — 02 Apr 2017
Overall, I thought the movie was fine. I don't regret seeing it like it seems some other people do. That being said, I likely won't buy it when it comes out on DVD/digital format. I'd watch it again if it was on Netflix or something. I'd say the 66%/61% it currently has from critics/audience is about accurate scoring thus me giving it 3/5 stars. I don't love horror movies but I'm a big fan of space sci-fi, so that's more what drew me to it plus the cast. I didn't find the movie as scary as I was expecting it to be, which I didn't mind too much given I don't love horror movies and don't mind not having the s**t scared out of me, but due to that I can see why others might hate more on this movie. I didn't feel myself that drawn into the characters either so didn't feel much as people were getting snuffed.
As someone who is a big fan of movie scores (the music) and a big fan of music by Hans Zimmer and other similar artists, I have to say Jon Ekstrand did a great job on the score for this movie.
That all being said, I think it's a bit ridiculous people are hating on it so much saying it's plagiarizing or a complete copy of Alien and other similar movies. Sure, according to the interview I just read, the writers mention that they took influences from other films but by no means is it a complete copy or a close copy besides the fact that it's an alien that grows after feeding. I admit, I've only seen Alien and Aliens once this past Fall, but I read those comments before the movie and the whole time I was trying to see the similarities and I couldn't see any besides an alien on a spaceship attacking the crew that grows after feeding so it seems like calling this a copy is a bit of a stretch. Probably just Alien/Aliens super fans who are extremely loyal to those movies being extremely sensitive . Calling this a copy would be like saying Taken is a plagiarism or copy of Bourne Identity because both are about an American spy who is ridiculously good at fighting and spy craft.
