Review of Lie with Me (2004) by Danielle B — 03 Jul 2007
My interest in the film played out quite like Shortbus; interested and such until about fifty minutes, maybe an hour through, then I just couldn't wait until it was over. Eric Balfour, while cute, doesn't really provide any, um, acting, save for maybe the few scenes with his dad. Otherwise, he's just generic, cute, fucked-up guy X. Lauren Lee Smith was actually fairly interesting to watch, but the lack of character development and he drop-off in interest most people would probably suffer after about fifty minutes means that even though she's good (and, seeing as it's just her and Eric, carries the whole movie herself), the movie itself isn't. The sexuality in the movie is interesting, and even pretty hot at some points, but as a love story, there's really nothing that sets it apart from anything else.
After a bit of reflection though, I will admit that I liked watching it, and that I'd watch it again, though perhaps not too often (it's just a bit slow at parts). The sex scenes are certainly convincing, and the actors are pretty comfortable with all of it. The dialogue is actually pretty interesting. Worth seeing (especially if you hated Shortbus, but really *wanted* to like it).
