Review of Licence to Kill (1989) by Chris R — 26 Feb 2013
'Licence to Kill' is a much better film than most Bond fans seem to think. It is very easy to brush off Timothy Dalton as James Bond, however I thought he had a better run as 007 in two films than Pierce Brosnan did in four.
Dalton was criticized at the time for being too dark and 'gritty' with his version while now Daniel Craig does the same and receives praise. While Craig and Dalton are unique in their own way, it is a strange thing to complain about one and praising the other even though both are trying to be serious with the role.
Speaking of darker, this was the only Bond film to originally receive an 'R' rating before edits to it made it 'PG-13' which also marks the series first outing with this rating as well.
It's a brutal film and if you really enjoyed the more recent films, I recommend the Dalton era of films for some more serious Bond films. If that's your thing of course.
