Review of Licence to Kill (1989) by Adam F — 03 Aug 2008
Licence to Kill is one of the better Bond movies in my mind. It is pretty hardcore for a normal Bond movie with the exception Craig's Casino Royale. Sure Timothy Dalton is a bad fit for James Bond but the revenge story, the darkness to it (for a 80s/90s Bond movie), is a fresh surprise to the campy Roger Moore movies of the 70s. Sure it has pure Bond elements like driving a semi on 9 wheels to avoid a stinger missle but the plotting villain against villain is always fun to watch. The most fun to watch villains-feel-betrayed-by-other-villains-even-when-they-weren't with the exception of The Punisher. In light of this fact, a lot of 2000 movie themes came from this movie such as the 2 million dollar payoff to get a villain out of custody a la S.W.A.T., the villain on villain action a la Punisher (as previous mentioned), and the Bond goes rogue as the new Quantum of Solace trailer seems to be about.
LINGERING QUESTION: If this movie was so bad, why are all these newer movies using its same themes?
