Review of Liberal Arts (2012) by Neville K — 01 Oct 2012
Slight, light and the longest 97 minutes I've spent with a film in a very long time, this is an odd sort of movie: I loved the authors quoted, the ideas exchanged, the great one-liners, the message the film so desperately wanted to convey (from the writer/director Josh Radnor) and yet, I really did not like this movie.
It was frustrating and too cute, too spoonfeeding an audience the morals of the story the main character has yet to learn and yet, we feel as though he already knows them. This is what happens, I'm afraid, when the writer gets in the way of a decent story.
I wish I could like this movie. I went in really wanting to. Maybe that was my problem.
