Review of Liberal Arts (2012) by Randa D — 20 Oct 2012
I tried to go see Argo at a nearby neighborhood theater, and as what seems to be becoming a trend there, it was sold out. So- I went to see Liberal Arts. I was not expecting much so, I was happy with its lighthearted look at existentialism and nostalgia.
I definitely laughed out loud in the scenes that included Allison Janney and Zac Efron. Efron pops in and out of the movie as the magical mushroom sage who bestows simple truths upon the lead and audience .
Some critics thought that this character was an unbelievable, cheap device, but then I would wonder if said critics had any fun in their 20's if they didn't have the occasion to run into a character like Efron, making him real and authentic in my mind.
And Janney is an English Professor who is still teaching the lead a few lessons. Anyhow- this film is not great, but I give it up to Josh Radnor the writer / director for staying away from the Hollywood rom-com formula for long as he could.
A fun movie with decent dialogue. I say see it, especially if the movie that you wanted to see is sold out.
