Review of Liberal Arts (2012) by Nicholas H — 25 Feb 2013
I liked Josh Radnor's directorial debut, but his follow-up completely failed to capture my attention for anything past short spans of time, at least until the third act. (Odd, I know.) Perhaps this is because it was beyond self-indulgent; the best example I can give is how Radnor's Jesse and Elizabeth Olsen's Zibby exchange handwritten letters - in the 2010s! - and even comment on this type of communication as being "the best thing ever." This script loves itself more than anybody else ever could.
It's possible the script and directing would be bettered by having someone other than Radnor himself in the lead, sort of diluting the smarminess by filtering it through another person. It might not work, but it couldn't hurt.
