Review of Leviathan (2014) by Tim G — 02 Mar 2015
One of this year's Oscar nominated Foreign Films and the winner of the Golden Globe is worth all the awards attention. It starts off fairly slow but finds its footing when the movie's plot shifts.
It's my biggest complaint with the film but also a fresh new direction that I liked more than what they were going for originally. It starts out as an anti government lawyer movie but then shifts to a very well done family drama.
It did what Force Majeure, another popular Foreign Film this year, was trying to go for but didn't do so well, better. I loved the scene where pretty much all the characters are in this valley having a picnic.
Great chemistry with all of those actors. But the other stand out in this movie was the Roman Madyanov who played the Mayor of this town trying to take the main character's house for government use.
His scenes are fiery and filled with lots of life. It's well written, great ensemble performance, beautiful shots of this Russian town, but it just kind of went too far to the left in a way that it just dropped the original plot line and made it irrelevant to the new plot line.
But with that said, this is a very good watch but is worth the rental because it is very long and you'll probably want to take a couple breathers in the middle of the movie.
