Review of Leviathan (2014) by Jon A — 16 Apr 2015
Occasionally tepid but never turgid drama that somehow manages to be both epic and intimate at the same time. It's as fatalistic as you'd expect for a Russian drama, but it also tells uncomfortable truths about the end victims of corruption, yet somehow manages to hold onto its own humanity at the same time.
It does rely heavily on the stereotype of the sozzled working class Russian, but as it was made by Russians for Russians, that's easy to forgive under the assumption that it may actually be correct.
