A well-told and brilliantly-filmed war story. I really liked how the overall tone of the film was neither pro-war or anti-war. you can understand the blood-and-guts patriotism, but you can also understand the overwhelming sense of hopelessness and futility.
the human element was also particularly poignant, especially when the Japanese soldiers heard the letter from the American's mother. a unique perspective on one of the premier battles of the last century.
for my money, one of the best WWII films ever made.
