Clint Eastwood's directs this long but thoughtful war epic, most notable for being told from a Japanese rather than typical American perspective. The action sequences might not bring anything new to the genre, but it's in the quiet moments that Eastwood shows his mastery, allowing the characters and their relationships to do the talking.
As such Letters From Iwo Jima might seem clunky and laborious to some, but for those willing to give it their concentration and time, this is a moving recreation direct from the hands of one of Hollywood's true greats.
