This movie had a strong sentimental feel to it. The hopelessness of victory for the Japanese made this movie feel downright depressing. Great action/battle scenes. "Iwo Jima" delivers a very powerful message: the negative effects of war, both on the natural landscape as well as in the lives of anybody involved.
