Review of Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) by Annelies S — 19 Sep 2009
The second movie of Clint Eastwood's two movies about the 1945 American attack on the Japanese island Iwo Jima. This movie is seen from the perspective of the Japanese and is entirely shot in the Japanese language.
I like this movie much more than the first one. Even more than in the "American" version this "Japanese" version shows the absurdity of war very clearly. The scene where the Japanese army is doing house calls and shoot a dog in front of a mother and her two children is absolutely absurd. Still it is known that Nazis and their allies did those unnecessary cruel things to show their soldiers how to be "patriotic".
This movie shows a lot more emotions than Flags of our Fathers and is a worthy successor to it. (However it is not necessary to watch Flags of our Fathers before Letters from Iwo Jima.).
