Review of Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) by Martyn I — 15 Dec 2009
By far the better part of the diptych. Although just as engaging, refreshing, equally balanced, and as powerful as Flags Of Our Fathers, this story feels much more warmer, and what the other film lacks, this film strongly makes up in.
This story is much more compelling, due to the fact that this kind of context is rarely done, and despite the fact it is directed by an American director (Clint Eastwood), it is executed, just as beautifully, as a foreign film.
The moment the opening titles appear, you know for a fact, that this is not only a lot better than Flags Of Our Fathers in style and grace, but it is more powerful in it's message, as you can sympathise more with the opposite side, and it can easily stand as an independent film.
Which in my opinion, makes this, the best war film of this decade. Highly recommended.
