Review of Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) by Georges D — 20 Jan 2010
Though supposedly dealing with the same subject, I must say I really prefered that movie to the Flags of our fathers, probably because in Letters of Iwo Jima the characters are less numerous and depicted more in details, but also because the angle is less political/general and way more centered on humans.
What is remarkable in that film is that both the radical japanese alterity AND universal human features are given to see, which allows the western spectator to fully emphasize with some of the characters and yet to feel completely stranger to some of the "enemy's" habits or conceptions.
Also, I might not be such a huge fan about war films, but I think the good ones tell us a lot about values and principles not so much into fashion anymore in our societies at peace, yet ready to be promoted again in times of adversity.
And well, Letters is very good war film...
