Hellish situations provide choices, making the right ones show who you are. WW2 was a test of character for individuals. The col. denies ritual and blind obeisance to the empire over personal moral calls, and only one soldier is willing to follow him.
Ppl choose for themselves and right and wrong are not servants to patriotism or fanaticism. Ritual and arrogance created the war for Japan but Clint makes the story universal. It is like a dream.
