Review of Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) by John C — 24 Nov 2010
Probably the best movie from the rarely seen Japanese point of view of the war. It may be part of my own personal bias, but I think Eastwood may have gone a bit too far in trying to show the emotions and humanity of the Japanese soldiers on the island.
There are some parts of the movie that are not consistent with the history of the battle, and the way the Imperial Japanese Army operated at that time. Ken Watanabe does an amazing job as the general charged with defending the island, which is known to be a lost cause.
Much better than its counterpart, Flags of Our Fathers, which this film should be seen in tandem. Maybe at some point the two films could be spliced together, much like Godfather 1 and 2 were, as some scenes are used in both movies.
As an American, my own opinion is that Das Boot does a better job of showing the story of men fighting for the other side, in that case, Germany.
