Review of Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) by Stephen S — 18 Dec 2011
Pretty good, clearly Oscar quality...that's what Eastwood is going for. Does a great job of portraying Japanese soldiers as ordinary men, just like the Americans they're fighting. What I like is that it portrays the fanatical Japanese soldiers as being a menace to both sides basically--they're killing their own men and causing Kuribayashi to lose the battle by dividing his forces.
The regular Japanese soldiers hate the fanatics as much as the Americans do, and that's what makes the viewer empathetic towards most of the Japanese soldiers (especially General Kuribayashi and Lt.
Colonel Nishi). Definitely check this out if you enjoy war films...just don't expect too much of a happy ending.
