Review of Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) by Jonathan D — 26 May 2012
Succeeds entirely both as a war movie and a personal movie. This *is* a war movie, unlike its psycho-stuffed revisionist companion "Flags of Our Fathers". Telling the story of Iwo Jima from the Japanese POV, whom we know are doomed, allows for empathy without sentimentality.
We care about the people, even as we do want history to proceed as we know it will. Apart from the mostly unknown cast, you'd never see this as a low budget movie. It looks so good and feels so complete.
