Review of Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) by Darren C — 05 Feb 2013
While I am still amazed that a movie almost entirely in Japanese ever was nominated for Best Picture, I have to admit that I'm unsure why this one was VS "Flags of our Fathers". I watched both within 2 days of each other, and I can't really imagine one without the other.
They compliment each other (with only the timeline and island of Iwo Jima connecting the two, from a story point of view), without treading on each other. Both paint the other side as evil, but Letters does it one better with some of the Japanese feeling that maybe the Americans were no different than them, and it was simply 2 countries a war, more so than humans VS humans.
Because it is unusual to see any director consider the other side of WW2 (and more specifically Japan's side), I had to rank this one slightly higher than "Flags...". Both are excellent however.
