Letters from Iwo Jima was illuminated what the Japanese experienced during the siege of Iwo Jima by the marines. Throughout the movie saigo experiences the harshness of the Japanese drive to hold the island.
as the movie progressed viewers meet general Kuribayashi who was place in charge of defending the island form the Americans. After digging into mount Suribachi the island learns that the Japanese nave has been defeated and all available planes are to return to the home- land to defend it.
after a heated battle for mount Suribachi saigo escapes to the northern sector of the island to continue fighting. In his final hour general Kuribayashi ordered saigo to burn all military documents while he and the rest of the troops attempted a final charge at the american camps.
during the assault the general is injured and dragged away by Fujita to the coast. just as Fujita is about to behead Kuribayashi his is shot and killed by an american sniper, while Kuribayashi is slowly dying.
saigo arrives and is asked by general Kuribayashi if the coast that they are near is "Still Japaneses land". With is final act as general Kuribayashi shots himself, a depressed saigo drags Kuribayashi to the coast to bury him forgetting the generals handgun.
shortly after saigo is found by a platoon of soldiers only to start swinging his shovel in an attempt to fight. the movie ends with saigo lying beside american soldiers, before his to be sent to a camp.
