Review of Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) by Toosinb. — 24 Dec 2006
"Letters" didn't live up to the hype, IMHO. It does portray Japanese soldiers as 3d human beings but is that such an accomplishment? It shows how they ran out of ammo, hadn't eaten and without water for 5 days, and so on.
It also demonstrates how they mistreated each other because of their enormous macho honor and "patriotism" but to me it gets a little overdone and forced. The battles don't seem real to me either.
Even so, I enjoyed the film and felt a lot of sympathy for the poor soldiers trapped in the middle. Very much like the real thing in that respect.
