Review of Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) by Rob L — 22 Mar 2010
Clint Eastwood?s ?Letters from Iwo Jima? is a powerful companion piece to his ?Flags of our Fathers? and one that debunks much preconceived wisdom about Japan?s involvement in World War II. The uncaring, venal automata of TV series such as ?Tenko? are swept away to reveal a peopled scarred equally by war and a brutal militarist regime. Soldiers of upper and lower ranks are shown fighting the ultimate losing battle on the rocky outcrops of the Pacific, with water polluted by dysentery, caves bereft of air and landscapes strafed by machine gun fire.
I actually thought this film was way superior to the American one. It?s also easy to forget that Eastwood, good as he is, has directed it ? the impression of a home grown movie of high seriousness is ever present and the result is something of a masterpiece.
