Review of Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) by Shira K — 25 Dec 2010
Interesting look at the problems of mental illness. The entire movie you can't decipher if everything is in her mind or if evil really does lurk in her home. I found it to be the most frightening film I ever saw as a kid, and I love that seeing it years later I still had a few shriek moments which were completely unexpected.
Some say the film hasn't stood the test of time...well I say the fact that it is a bit dated makes it all the more frightening: When a film lacks special effects and relies solely on letting the audience get whatever cathartic experiences they may have on their own, blended with uncertainty and the creepy quality of something out of time, then this film is what happens.
It gets the job done of remaining with the audience, and raising questions and a few unnerving tingles down your spine. Maybe it was the creepy wallpaper- I say it made her bonkers.
