Review of Let's Be Cops (2014) by Jordan S — 05 Jan 2015
College buddies Ryan and Justin moved to LA to pursue their dreams, but things aren't exactly going their way. Justin wants to design video-games and Ryan is living off his glory days as a college QB.
Just as two decide to throw in the towel and head back for home, they don police uniforms for what they think will be a costume party. It's not but the two find that respect given to them just from wearing the uniforms while walking back to their car is a lot of fun and soon they're impersonating police officers. It doesn't help that the two run afoul of a group of mobsters -- first when they hit Ryan's car and later when they run off a mobster threatening a local business.
At this point, hilarity should begin to ensue, but it never quite does. The comic chemistry between Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans, Jr. is evident -- but then again, you can see that each week on "New Girl.".
There should me more humor mined from Ryan's throwing himself with such gusto in the role of being a police officer (studying on-line, buying a used cruiser on E-bay and then putting his own LA police decals on it) and Justin's reaction to it. Unfortunately, the plot of this film never wants to be more than what could have been a b-plot for a sitcom or another movie.
