Review of Lethal Weapon 4 (1998) by Mark D — 12 Dec 2009

Despite the fact that this unnecessary fourth entry to the series takes things much further over the top than any of the previous films, there is a tighter sense of chemistry between everybody involved (including Chris Rock who is the new addition in this one) and this saves the film from being a complete mess.

There is definitely more comedy here than there was in the first two films, but this suits the tone of the film and doesn't detract from the brutal fight scenes. Jet Li is an interesting choice for the villain, mostly because he's completely out of Riggs and Murthaugh's league in terms of hand-to-hand combat, and thus remains very threatening when he appears on-screen.

Things get pretty ridiculous at times, but there's enough good to outweigh the bad, even if just barely.
