Review of Lethal Weapon (1987) by Rodney E — 02 Jan 2013
Aside from Mad Max 1 and 2 and Braveheart, I'm not a Gibson fan. Yes I like the Passion and maybe with all the acclaim that came with that movie Mel started thinking he was the right hand man of God and started to think he is some godlike figure.
I think the Lethal Weapon movies suck for the most part. They are by the numbers. Ok, Mel is all suicidal and a lone loose cannon so lets pair him up with a black family man who is getting too old for this.
Of course they are going to ruffle each tohers fetahers but walk away with a genuine respect for one another. I mean the plot never really went further than that. Because Gibson and Danny Glover had decent chemistry they decided to milk this dry.
This works because it is a product of the 80's and has decent turns by Tommy Atkins and the man they call Busey. But still the action wasn't really great. Why three stars? Because while it has never been a movie or series that I got into or really enjoyed, they did kind of set the standard for mediocre action movies and improbable character pair ups.
I'm not even sure that I have seen this all the way. The only one I am sure that I saw all the way was the 4th one and that was pretty much a sitcom. Richard Donner made Superman and The Lost Boys and hasn't done anything nearly as cool since.
