Review of Let the Right One In (2008) by Shane G — 05 Jun 2012
In the slew of vampire movies released in the last few years, Let The Right One In is a breath of fresh., grim air. It is not for kids, despite being about children. It is about apathy and how it allows the most grim and horrible events to pass by like everyday routine.
The protagonist, Oskar, is a 12-year-old boy who is viciously bullied at school. He lives in an apartment where he pretends to get his revenge on his bullies while his separated parents don't bother to care.
He is used to bad things, so he has little to react to. Bad things are now commonplace, and the he meets his new neighbor Eli. Oskar is not surprised to find out that she is a vampire, because he relates with her too well.
She understands his loneliness, his anger, his apathy to the world around him. It is not just a vampire movie, it is a movie about that uses vampires as a way of paralleling Oskar's passiveness. It is a truly haunting movie.
