Review of Let Me In (2010) by J Brigham H — 04 Oct 2012
I feel I must begin with a disclaimer: I have not seen LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, so I cannot judge this as a remake. LET ME IN could just as well have been titled "Twilight: A Rebuttal", as it takes a real world vampire romance, but blatantly refuses to accept changes to vampire lore as the Twilight series was saturated in.
Most important though, is that it is so much better in every way. As a vampire movie, a romance, a thriller and a coming-of-age story, it is thoroughly excellent. It does not shy from the harsh realities of its story, whether they be the brutally merciless bullying that Owen faces at school, or the necessary cold-heartedness of vampirism and the accompanying isolation.
The darkness of the world presented helps the goodness and friendship found in the story so much more effective by contrast. Moretz is well on her way to becoming the next great young American actress, assuming she doesn't fall victim to a Lohan-esque breakdown, and here she proves her worth again as the lonely vampire who, though generally good by nature, is forced to feed on human blood and has a brutal streak.
It's not a conventional romance, but it is a first love story, not sensual, but sweet; a bond of protection.
