Review of Let Me In (2010) by Ben R — 18 Apr 2013
This was not as great as the original...I'm just going to get that right out of the way, but for what it does on its own for a stand alone film is amazing. This is above and beyond most of the modern horror coming out nowadays. The only things that work against this is that, alot of the slow parts go by waaaayyyy too slow unlike the original. The original had atmosphere going for it and surprise, because you had never seen or heard of anything like it, but this being a remake you sorta knew what to expect. So when they spend time just dragging on and on and on about something that doesn't really fit well into the story, it shows big time.
The Elias Koteas character of the police man was sorta a waste to be honest with you and I like him as an actor but this just wasn't the film for him.
Richard Jenkins as the creepy Pedo father/vampire helper/killer was the greatest part of this movie. He played this role almost too perfectly and it gave me the creeps, and this is coming from someone who's been watching horror and exploitation movies most of his life. He did an amazing job and is one of the most underrated and underused character actors ever.
Chloe Moretz did a great job as Abby but I felt the original Ellie was somewhat more creepy as the kid vampire. Kodi Smit McPhee who plays Owen was alright but honestly got on my nerves alot in this.Where the original Oscar was very sympathetic.... the Owen character in this was too hopeless and helpless to the point where I was yelling at the screen for him to fight back. I think it has alot to do with his facial expressions and his creepy girl like face that made me wonder at times, if he was in fact a little girl. That aside I think he is a very good child actor who just makes some annoying faces.
The gore and main vampire action was amazing, but I wish there was alot more of it. The positives for this film do outweigh the negatives here so I'd say give it a shot. The worst that could happen is you fall asleep because it is slow at times and you might have to watch it again. It's at least worth a one time rental.
