Review of Let It Be (1970) by John M — 11 Jun 2008
Probably the worst possible idea to film a documentary at this stage of their career, a film of the Revolver sessions would have been wonderful. Instead this is an epitaph as we watch the Beatles go through the motions one last time, dot the I's and cross the T's of their truly mesmerizing career. The tension is palpable, Lennon usually never at a loss for words remains tight lipped clearly livid at the presence of the cameras, so Paul is left to fill the silence, but his musings have a hollow rhetorical quality as nobody cares to contribute.
Though there is little actual fighting or arguing, it has been rumored that the footage that was cut out is so sensitive and raw that it is likely never to see the light of day while Ringo and Paul are still alive.
A sad film indeed.
