Review of Let Him Go (2020) by Reeltruth — 27 Aug 2021
Sorry contains spoilers. I was disappointed in this film. The critics were way too generous. It’s wonderful to see Diane Lane and Kevin Costner together again. Both bring a lot to the table and give solid performances in this film.
The slower pace and character driven script were both refreshing given what’s currently available. The reason I was disappointed was the realism of the script. There were scenes that didn’t make sense or ring true.
I was frustrated with some of the responses and where the script took the audience. I found myself rolling my eyes at how unbelievable some of it was. If my husband of decades was shot and killed I would not leave him in a burning house and drive away with only a few tears (and an ex daughter-in-law I had little connection with), even though I had rescued the beloved grandson.
There was a man with her when she discovered her dead husband, why didn’t they pull him out of the house? Lane should have been more distressed with his death just as Costner should have been more distressed when he discovered his dead son.
The deaths felt trivialized to the point of distraction.
