Robert Downey, Jr.'s performance barely redeems this film. Screenwriter Harley Peyton took a novel that described a degenerate, nihilistic bourgeoisie with a non-judgmental, matter-of-fact tone appropriate to his amoral characters and changed it into another run-of-the-mill morality tale about the perils of drug use.
He made the main character, Clay, into a moral compass helping his girlfriend and Julian to see the peril of their ways. I'm wondering why it's even considered an adapted screenplay since the book and the film are polar opposites.
