Review of Less Than Zero (1987) by Emma J — 23 Feb 2010
This film is either a hit or a miss with many viewers, and I can see why. Less Than Zero was considered "unfilmable" and the translation from Book to Silver Screen is a bit rocky and it strays from the source material at times but the overall message of the novel is still intact.
The main highlights of this film are the performances that Robert Downey Jr. and James Spader dish out as Julian and Rip, a fiend with a serious problem and a big shot yet low-level dealer. Ultimately in the end, it's these two who save the film from being a miserable excuse and actually make the movie somewhat charming.
It may be highly criticized, but I consider it to be one of the better movies to come out the 1980's because of the story and characters alone. My own personal percentage for this is 82%, but for now it'll rest at an 80%.
