Review of Less Than Zero (1987) by Elizabeth F — 20 Nov 2010
Very uneven movie and has virtually NOTHING to do with the excellent book by Bret Easton Ellis. Sanitized to a pointless level at times, it has some amazing parts to it: the cinematography and the music score are among the best of any film that came out in the 80s and the performances by Robert Downey Jr, James Spader and Jami Gertz are all dead on (Andrew McCarthey is HORRIBLE, however).
The director seems to be trying really hard to retain the tone of the novel, but I have a feeling that a fairhtful adaptation of this book from a major studio during the "just say no"/AIDS crisis period of the 80s would have been impossible.
