Review of Less Than Zero (1987) by Tom S — 06 Mar 2011
I can see where it was shocking compared to St. Elmo's Fire or Breafast Club, but even with a more dangerous subject it still feels like an 80s movie. The nominal leads Andrew McCarthy and Jamie Gertz are limited performers especially Gertz. I'm not shocked to see that their careers wound down once we were tired of their looks. James Spader is talented as the quirky villain and Downey is brilliant as the drug addict he would learn to imitate in real life.
It took me 24 years to see it and while it's not superior filmmaking, Downey is moving enough that his performance makes the movie worth seeing.
