Review of Less Than Zero (1987) by Ollie W — 10 Mar 2011
Shoehorn the drifting amoral Ellis book into an afterschool-special 3-act morality play, throw in some gorgeous cinematography and very glossy production design, and you have this mixed up little 80's classic.
The black sheep of the 80's classics, in which there is little of the self-discovery John Hughes made all but obligatory, but rather a film whose characters SLOWLY become disillusioned with their shallow pretty lives in a film only redeemed by its shiny pretty surfaces.
Downey and Spader do a respectable job, but they are too one-note to really brighten up the whole picture.
