Review of Less Than Zero (1987) by Eric R — 15 Jun 2011
A film about a bunch of upper class los angeles teens. Clay returns home from his first year of college that his old friend Julian is a drug addict. This is a really poor adaption of the Bret Easton Ellis Novel.
Robert Downey Jr. is strong as the fun, party boy, Julian who is addicted to drugs and owes a lot of money to Rip. James Spader plays Rip, and he really is fantastic in the role. The relationship between Clay and Blair really lacks chemistry.
The direction on a whole is rather weak, and the film, given the content, should have been more stylized. I do love the production design but the story doesn't really push the boundaries enough to capture the sharpness of these characters in the novel.
This got me thinking; American Psycho is hands down the best adaption of an Ellis novel.
