Review of Lesbian Vampire Killers (2009) by Alistair W — 17 Apr 2009
A film as good as it is terrible. You can pretty much guess why they included 'lesbian' in the title.
We follow recent comic duo Mathew Horne and James Corden in their first feature film together. Having not been a great fan of 'Gavin and Stacey' I didn't know how funny they were.
Well, Horne is amusing but boring most of the time, whilst Corden is an annoying person (or tw*t as he asks Horne numerous times in the film) with funny one-liners. Corden's opening scene was his best in the film.
The plot is good, probably the second best thing in the film. The best thing is the Vicar played by Paul McGann (best known for Doctor Who in the 90s) who was spot on with his acting. MyAnna Buring as Lotte is a close second, she was good, unfortunately too good, she came on to strong in my opinion. Vera Filatova is also great as the Vampire Queen's head lesbian, but could have done better.
The effects are good at times, but iffy moments do occur. The main problem is how the vampires die; they become a puddle of goo. Corden's character expected more, so did I.
As for the rest of the cast, well, you can't really describe them as talent. Poor acting really does let this film down. You just get the feeling that they were chosen only because they made great lesbians, with the exception of Lucy Gaskell (who plays Judy) who was just awful as both a lesbian and an actress.
Overall, only recommended for true Horne and Corden fans. Otherwise, it's a hit-or-miss film.
