Review of Lesbian Vampire Killers (2009) by Clayton C — 24 Nov 2009
It is sad to see when someone takes someone elses funny and original ideas and tries to show us that theirs is even better by doing basically (and much more inferior) the same thing... and it is even sadder when I get sucked into spending money on it.
Lesbian Vampire Killers is one of those types of movies. A premise that looks stupid, yet funny and entertaining, but if you have seen old fifties horror films, or Shaun of the Dead or a slew of these " black" comedies that have been coming out of England now for a few years...or know the work of the two guys from that film... then you have seen this all done before... and much better and more original.
They say that imitation is the greatest form of flattery, but personally, if I am going to imitate someone, I would at least want to get it funny and entertaining in the process. One can't help but think they are watching a sad tribute to the two guys from Shaun of the Dead, and quite frankly by the end of the movie I really wanted the larger (fletch guy... ) to just die and go away, and I had not feelings about the other one as his character seemed to have the personality of a dail tone and I mostly just forgot he was even in the movie.
As for the "lesbians"? Well the fact that they could not act at all was a given, I was expecting (and hoping) for that. Unfortunately they were actually so bad they were not even funny, but more sad in just how bad they were TRYING to be bad.
The lesbianistic (making up words everywhere) scenes to the film were nothing more then what you would see at any cheesy nightclub where people had too much to drink and the guys are all sitting around with that stupid grin fantasizing about something that was never there in the first place.... and of course the flash of a nipple or two and then a comment from the big guy about something (NOT) funny....
Other "highlights"?
- endless times they made jokes alluding to something about each other or a penis or something... and then reassured each other it was not in a gay way... you know... NO HOMO.... ha ha ha... funny right? (not). The only thing that made my eyes roll more was the priest that kept saying the F word.... with the big guy Fletch playing for laughs as to how unnerving it was to be around a priest that swore... Not funny the first time, but apparently they thought it was as they played that for laughs at least a couple of more times....
And therein (for me) laid the biggest problem of the entire movie....There was nothing about this film that is funny at all really... or correction to be more exact there is nothing about this film that was as funny as these people thought it was... not even close.
NOw I could be in the minority on this one, as the screening I saw this in was sold out and there were laughs all round, but then again (and this is a personal judgement so take it as you will), a large percentage of the crowd definately seemed to be the type who live for those cliche 13 year old school boy fantasies, and probably loved the movie 300 as well... so you do the math.
