Review of Lesbian Vampire Killers (2009) by Ian B — 10 May 2010
It tries oh-so-hard to capture that Shaun of the Dead vibe but can't come close thanks to a weak script and annoying editing. That being said, there's still some great stuff to enjoy here.
This is a crappy movie that knows it's a crappy movie and has all the fun it can with the premise. The performances are enjoyable and there's absolutely no shortage of lesbian vampires, but the characters are beyond one-dimensional and half the jokes fall flat. Which is a shame because the jokes that work really work well. The best scenes in the movie are the banter between James Corden and Paul McGann. Had the movie revolved around these two we might have ended up with something better. Instead our "hero" is an annoying crybaby that's impossible to root for.
The editing and gratuitous camera tricks are also completely distracting. Had the direction been a little more straight-forward maybe we could pay a little more attention to the jokes and less about the cheap sound effects and sped-up/slowed-down camera shots. It's the type of junk you'd expect to see in a student film that's trying way too hard to impress people.
Great performances (especially from Corden and McGann), some truly hilarious moments and absolutely no shortage of eye candy....but the script needed a lot of work, the editing is annoying, and it's just not half as funny as it could've been. It tries hard and is definitely worth a rental if you're in the mood for something dumb and goofy....and full of hot lesbian vampires.
