Review of Les Misérables (2012) by Lindsay W — 03 Mar 2014
My kingdom for an alto! Apparently France exists only with sopranos, and barely a half hour in I needed an Advil. Russell Crowe was just so utterly terrible, and the decision to sing every single line just brought out the worst in even the better singers. Most scenes just seemed awkward and forced that way. Although I realize that, of course, on stage they sing everything, the film makers were aware they could change things to fit the talent they had, right?
Granted, I Dreamed a Dream sung by Anne Hathaway was hauntingly moving. And there were a handful of other ethereal moments. But mostly, I just wanted it over.
