Review of Les Misérables (2012) by Mark J — 02 May 2015
I know many fans of the musical did not like this and I completely understand why, but I find it a worthy adaption that lives up to expectations. The live singing at times makes the movie more intimate and at others draws you away.
I loved the sets and the camera the glides in a shaky manner through the songs around paris. Helena Bonham Carter was great as Madame Thenedier (however you spell that) and Anne Hathaway and Samantha Barks were also pretty good.
One of my only complaints is that all of the roles except for Eponine are performed by actors and so instead of a musical piece it is an acting piece which really gives a different feel to Les Miserables that people like me that interpret the story through the music aren't quite as satisfied as maybe the rest.
But this is an adaption of what is probably the most famous musical and so if you can't get to a theatre to see Les Miserables this is a great substitute.
