Review of Les Misérables (2012) by Christy P — 08 Nov 2013
This has absolutely nothing on either the original stage musical or the non-musical film of the late 90's. Most of the singing is just not good enough to be taken seriously. It would have been much better to employ the great singers who perform on the stage rather than actors who just can't understand how musicals work.
It only makes sense that they wouldn't; actors work with speaking, not singing... the opposite is true of singers. Since in a musical, the spoken word is not as important as singing, singers, not actors, should be chosen to perform.
The overuse of computer animation is also objectionable, and the repairing of Sacha Baron Coen and Helena Bonham Carter in another dark-spirited, gray-colored movie was a bit redundant. Sweeney Todd was quite enough.
Besides, the character Bonham Carter plays has always been portrayed as being overweight, and the choice to change that fact in this movie was presumptuous.
